The University recognises that students may occasionally need to be absent from their studies due to personal circumstances. There are two types of approved absence available:
- Self-Certified Absence
- Authorised Absence
Self-Certified Absence
A Self-Certified Absence is intended for short-term, unexpected absences of up to 5 working days.
- No supporting evidence is required.
- Self-certification can only be used once per semester.
- It should be used for one-off, unforeseen circumstances that prevent you from attending your studies.
Authorised Absence
An Authorised Absence is for periods of absence that:
- Exceed the criteria for Self-Certification, or
- Involve circumstances that require a longer or pre-planned absence.
Guidance on the circumstances that may be considered for Authorised Absence can be found in the UCA Engagement & Attendance Policy.
Important information
- All Authorised Absence requests must be supported by appropriate evidence
- Requests submitted without evidence cannot be considered
- Submitting a request does not guarantee approval
- You must continue to attend timetabled classes and engage with your studies until you receive confirmation that your request has been approved.
Sponsored international students
If you are studying under a Student Route visa, please be aware that any period of Authorised Absence counts towards your 60-calendar-day absence limit.
If this limit is reached, you will be withdrawn from your course. For further information about your visa responsibilities, please refer to the International Student Guidance.
